In 2009 the Drug Enforcement Administration had a growing problem. Agents were catching
criminals at or near our Southern border, but they were having increasing difficulty in sending
evidence to headquarters in Washington DC needed to prosecute cartels and drug smugglers.
Their technology infrastructure was dated and not robust enough to handle large image and
video files. Delays in moving the needed data meant time was wasted in apprehending and
prosecuting criminals.
John Hearton and his team reached out with a solution. They had access to and knowledge of a
Department of Defense Network that had the capacity to handle the data transfer, securely
that the DEA needed. John was key in negotiating the agreement, one of the first and few,
between the Department of Justice, DEA, and the Department of Defense to for use of this
network.
By allowing the DEA to securely tunnel their information through this established network, it
provided a secure way to transfer data without requiring classification. The large bandwidth
network allowed agents to swiftly transport evidentiary data from the border to DC where
criminals could be prosecuted.
Many agencies and offices in Washington DC tend to duplicate efforts, especially in the
technology arena. The time and money saved by leveraging existing infrastructure between
Departments saved taxpayers millions of dollars and put criminals behind bars faster.
